Perils of Solo Travel from Fox News

Solo travel is always s little risky...or riskier...because you have no "fall back" person in case something happens...

That said...many great travel writers prefer to travel alone...because it forces them into the culture that they are in...precisely because there is no fall back option...in which to "cocoon" yourself...

Paul Theroux the writer...has almost always  been a solo traveler....

However, there is no shame in hiring a guide in risky or remote places... Your guide becomes your protector...your fall back person...

Just getting lost is often the most dangerous thing....

Having a hotel desk clerk that can be your "in country" fall back resource and contact...  can mitigate the dangers of solo travel... They know their neighborhood...if you need a service done or medical contact...

Being in good health  helps...

And being somewhat cautious of your immediate surroundings is also good policy...

Your airline ... or your "in country" means of transport...often "owes you" a fall back option that comes with your ticket purchase...

Avoiding over helpful people...and not looking like you need help is a good idea...

Walk fast...don't gaze at maps which are probably useless anyway since none of the street are marked with signs... expressing confidence and an in charge attitude is a big advantage...
